College Majors we gravitate towards: (my made up list)
English/Journalism
Communications/Marketing
Sociology
Psychology
Education
Women's Studies
---------------
Most inticing professions for ENFP's
Entertainment Industry---
* television show producer/writer
*assistant producer
* movie producer/writer
* investigative journalist
* magazine writer
Advertising--
*Marketing creative team member
*magazine writer
Education/Counseling---
*Inspriational Speaker, group lecturer, team trainer
*Life Coach
*Private Consultant
*Guidance Counselor/Libral arts college/ private High Schools
*Coupples Counselor, Counselor of Groups and dealing with relationships, identity
*teacher, English, creative writing, film, psychology, sociology etc.
*Career Counselor
*Human Resources recruiter
Health Care---
Personal Trainer
Nutirionist, nutirional counselor, speaker, book writer
Holistic helath care practioner
Patient advocate (hospital)
I think it would be coolest to work in the entertainment industry, but also the least practical, and long hours too, and not much room for autonomy and job sucurity, or pay.
Second best would to be an Independent Consultant, then Marketing creative idea person, then a teacher at a university, and then a counselor.
I think counseling is harder, cause we ENFPs want to be like counselors but we tend to interrupt, and want to be the center of attention and brillant and bright and shiny, and noticed and not the best listeners in the world, but better talkers than listeners, so counseling we have to restrain ourselves, but learning how to listen is a good skill.
what do you all thing about this list... anything to add...
Do you think its better to go for whats realistic, or to try and aim for Hollywood?

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Mon, April 30, 2007 - 9:52 AMlove your list . . . very much agree with it . . .
as far as the whole entertainment industry deal, here's me: love to be perceived by others as being a funny, entertaining, engaging, intriguing, unique, witty & hopefully physically attractive person also (i guess i love to be loved?) but at the same time . . . we are not ESFPs and the entertainment industry would probably wear on us (in the long term) and we would start to question the meaning, the significance, our contribution to the "big picture" because of our darn "NF". we would probably start to resent what we are doing & asking ourselves "am i really truly helping people?" because I think it's very easy for us ENFPs to see both / all sides of the story / spectrum, ie. I'm helping but also hurting. - at least that's how i used to feel when i was a hairstylist. i'm helping this person to look great, . . . but who cares about hair - - how shallow. but that's just me . . . i always have internal struggle / dialogue with myself like that. i just think we all need to quiet our minds or meditate. (i'm a big hypocrite though, because i never do either, heee heee :) !!! -

Sat, July 14, 2007 - 8:56 PMWow... first time to this site. Found this post through Google and I must say you hit the nail right on the head! So are we doomed to a life of constant searching? What can we do that will satisfy our creative needs as well as our desire to do something meaningful that will contribute positively to our society? -

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Mon, July 16, 2007 - 4:34 PMThat's the same way I ended up here...
I think we are doomed to a life unsatisfied - but not always in the same department - that will move around (at least for me it has) but there is always some part of me that is looking to see if there are greener pastures in one part of my life or another.

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Wed, May 30, 2007 - 2:38 PMHi! I'm Heather. I've never posted before and just joined and I am loving this b/c I am obsessed with Meyers Briggs. Anyway, I very much agree with your list, too, Christina. I am having an existential crisis because I don't know what to do with my life. Yes, like you, I would LOVE to be in the entertainment industry. Would love love to be an actress, a film producer, singer, etc., but I am a borderline J, so I'm not dreamy enough (or ballsey enough) to trust the unknown and go to Hollywood. I am currently in public relations, but do not feel that I'll be fufilled if I continue down this career path. I've toyed with the idea of using PR as a gateway to journalism, as I would love that, too. I've been out of undergrad for a year, and it's time to get serious about my future. I was a marketing/psychology major, and since I was a child, have always wanted to be a counselor. I am thinking of making a move to D.C. to work in a research lab in order to get into grad school for clinical psychology. Thoughts, anyone? Is anyone currently in any of these professions? Is journalism fufulling or interpersonal enough? Do you tend to begin to feel like a mere observer as a journalist? Is counseling depressing? We are an emotional breed, and tend to internalize problems of others. Though I know counseling is a popular profession for us, is it a sad profession that makes for a sad life? And I'll echo Christina's question, should we all just forget the rest and move to L.A.? -

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 11:45 AMFinally a place to feel completely at home! A host of beautiful fellow ENFPs who understand how difficult it is to actually make a choice and pursue one career-path! Love the list, and have either at one point or the other considered almost all of the possible professions or already pursued some.
My major in college was English. And since I come from non English speaking country, that means I chose to study foreign language and literature. Chose the major because the program encompasses language, literature and history. Variety, variety. Yay! Now I work as a free lance interpreter/translator & for the most part I'm really enjoying this fast-paced & dynamic job--one is often on the road, working with new people, always learning about new subjects /depending on the topics of conferences, seminars.../...but...always a but somewhere in there...
Now almost completely sure I want to pursue Education & work with children, preferably in a very progressive school. In any case, very interested in the various methods of teaching. Want to be able to sort of create a comfortable learning atmosphere for students & help them pursue their interests and (hahah how romantic of me!) help them feel good about themselves. Speaking of kids, I'm also very interested in children's literature.
I have considered an academic career, but realized I could not work within confines of Academia. It was hard to admit to myself, but I did.
Worked in media as well. Enjoyed it. But not my first choice.
I could see myself working on campaigns. I find political strategy very interesting. Also fast-paced, dynamic, a bunch of people, having to quickly adapt to new developments...like all of that.
I think ENFPs could do well in sales, be really good promoters...

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Tue, July 31, 2007 - 10:44 PMHello heather and everyone else !
First off, I just joined this group and I'm ecstatic to find a group of people just like me, as it is empowering to share with similar people. As only 2-3% of the population it can be discouraging sometimes being around the overwhelming opposing forces out there.
Anyway, I am leaving a six figure job as an engineer because after nine years, I have totally failed to have passion for staring at a computer or designing pipes, or being around people who don't feel life as deeply as I do. I've always left work and gravitated towards holistic types like the yogis and the naturopaths and healers.
So I am indeed going into a position as a wellness and lifestyle entrepreneur. I say this Heather, because you asked the question of whether being a counselor would be saddening. Why don't you be a coach ? It was described to me that a counselor looks at the past, while a coach looks at the future. So it's more positive. You have to have basic counseling skills, but you then get to take someone to a higher place and feel the joy of watching them prosper. I also will call myself an entrepreneur because it is all what we manifest right ? We can think small and work on a low hourly wage, or we can attract the attention of the well-to-do and take them around the world on transformational retreats. Why limit ourselves ?
Love to all

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 7:35 PMwow, yeah
traditional psychology does look a lot at history, mom and dad.
Past issues. Blaming if there was dysfuntion of the family and focusing on sexual impulses.
ITs a pain in my ass.
I am still persuing psychology, because I plan on being a psychologist that briefly looks at the past to understand the future. and focusing on future oriented like a coach.
Psychology is going in that direction,,,the best therapists Ive had have all been future oriented, but most of all insightful.

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 12:18 PMLike the list...
top for me would be creative advertising agent followed by indpendant consultant/problem solver (which is what i currently do). Tough part for me (being a P) is sticking with any thing long enough to get to where i know i would be most valuable... you cant start at the top in an ad agency as the director of creative ideas.... which is where our personality would do the most good. instead you have to start at the bottom and work your way up and most ENFP's will get bored and jump ship before they ever see the bright shiny spotlight at the top of that climb.
I think I'm very lucky. I've been able to stay in a career as a consultant (software industry - testing focus) for 13 years (not all with the same company). I think that i was able to stay in the same career because as a consultant your clients are always changing and the problems are always new. Now i've been in it long enough to have a depth of experience in the software development lifecycle domain - which afforded me the opportunity to become a Director at a small consultancy and now i'm getting to do much more "sales and marketing" activities. I'm learning business development and account management because at this small consulting company, my CEO recognized the natural ability to read people and speak to their concerns.
hard to keep from going off on a tangent isnt it? but back to your list - Advertising - that would have been my first choice if i could start at the top. followed by Consulting (which i'm doing) followed by acting/directing movies.... followed by owning and operating a night club or restraunt - followed by running a bed and breakfast or resort (and i might try that one when i retire).

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Sat, June 30, 2007 - 5:04 PMI was a psychology major for 2 years, I took a break and now I'm almost done with studying massage therapy. I've also learned Reiki energy work. I plan on finishing the psychology; it's just taking all the other classes like math and bio that makes it hard. I'd say your list is right.

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Wed, July 4, 2007 - 12:39 AMhey christina, i just joined tribe and the enfp group and I'm loving how completely obssesive and dreamy all of us enfp's are, we're literally obssessed with being everything.
I feel like i've had at least 3 lives with all of my career and life changes. I actually studied theology untill one day in a remote village half-way around the world I realized I wasn't sure if I even believed in god anymore. since then I've had some great careers/jobs that I may or may not go back to in the future.
- I taught 5th grade and really loved it. the kids made eveyday hilarious, meaningful, and challenging... everyone 10 yr old as ADHD, and they all smell, and at least one of them is sick all of the time. But they're so much fun and it's the best when they actually understand a concept. I found that because I knew my kids were depending on me I HAD to become very organized. and our natural enfp desire for authenticity helps kids feel secure. I know my kids had a kick ass time too, and the kids and parents loved my crazy quirkiness and good communication. I think being with the same kids the whole year helped me push through some of my enfp committment issues too. A challenging aspect was having to "teach to the test" to fulfill curriculum or state test requirements. I definitely had to work hard (and stay longer hours at first) to figure out how to still be my inspirational enfp self, while keeping up with some of the bullshit rote-learning that we still promote in our schools. But all in all, this was one of my favorite jobs.
-I went back and got a masters in family therapy and became a therapist (mostly working with kids). I have to say, therapy was more difficult and less enjoyable for me than teaching, but not because of the listening thing. I'm a great listener and I'm sure you are too, I think that's an enfp trait. And I think another thing my clients appreciated was how well I seemed to know them (N), almost immediately, and not judge them (P). And it was fun to have various different clients. The negative aspects of being a therapist for me was what I still see as a somewhat defensive field in general - we still know so little about the mind and behavior etymology, etc, and yet we have an awful, rigid system of classifying behavior, and no one wants to ruffle the system. this makes the biz very duplicitous, eg., insurance only covers certain disorders with certain therapies so you have to "give" the client a disease so they can pay to get rid of it:). There's lots of paper work too and it can often be really sad. Sometimes I just wanted get out of the sterile "counseling" room I was in and get more involved in their lives - but I think that's called parenting. one of my sisters and my mother are social workers and sometimes have more "hands-on" involvement with clients.
-So now I'm a copywriter. I contract with small biz and web designers and do almost all of my work online. I travel whenever I want (I'll be for 5 mos this year), and once you have an in, business is steady enough. I'm also working on personal writing projects too - totally procrastinating now. I get a lot of meaning out of my personal writing, but I do miss having a job where i can interact / be social with others. The work is ok, the lifestyle kicks ass.
I've often thought about going back to teach in a few years, but I definitely have a desire to accomplish and maintain a presence as a writer. obviously I think it's ok to move around a bit.
i think careers are things we make up out of necesity and things we perpetuate out of lack of ingenuity - mostly we can just try to be authentic and try to enjoy the fullness of life - sorry this was so long, I figured I put some specifics in because occupation seems to be a big topic for us :) -

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Thu, August 2, 2007 - 12:11 PMthe only thing I have to add is .... I'm glad I'm not the only one? Or....maybe I'm glad I'm one of the ones...sheesh....
I consider myself to be a writer first.
I've worked in public education.
I currently do copy and substitute teach.
I have really recently wanted to make a career move that will put me in working with the media, perhaps advertisisng.
I think the latter is going to be a good match for me so long as I get creative control in my position. -

Thu, August 2, 2007 - 8:35 PMLA LA,
I think you are right. Media is huge, and we are so good at media. Communicating is HUGE!
We are the best!!! I think we just have to make the right connections with the right people and work our buts off to get to a high level.
Our ENFP charm helps, in the media, also, I would agree that writing is great, and one of the most wonderful, self gratifying forms of communication.
Thanks for adding...
...I know that I am always on a mission...and loving it...
my missions are never ending by the way, thats why I plan to do every job on the list!!!

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 6:08 PMI have jumped around trying to find a path that I want to go in.....I took a break from college because I felt like I wasn't working towards anything in particular-just something that was practical. But teaching is fascinating to me and I think that's the direction I want to go in. Why did you give it up?

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Thu, October 18, 2007 - 9:12 AMThis is long past your posting, Matt, but thank you for the insight. For a long time I've been debating between social work and teaching (I think this is a common debate for ENFPs), and your post re-affirmed for me that I should pursue teaching. It seems like you get to work with people, but you also get to use your creativity to plan projects and figure out how to teach a concept. It also sounds like it would push us ENFPs to be a little more organized too, which is nice. So thanks, Matt!

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Fri, August 3, 2007 - 4:39 AMSee for me it is more than seeking a career with the right "fit and flow" for us ENFPs. [Though, I can attest that in my life this probably one of my prime goals.]
To me it is about finding a PRACTICAL, CONTRIBUTING career/skill with the right "fit and flow" for us ENFPs.
What careers with practical skills... Like farmers, ranchers, plumbers, electricians, dentists, engineers, whatever... do you think have the right fit and flow for ENFPs?
I DO love the social sciences and writing, but ultimately these don't produce a tangible real world effect through their implementation [even though they certainly create a mental/social improvement :D], so I'd like to relegate them to a secondary status in my life goals for satisfaction-attainment. -

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Sat, August 4, 2007 - 8:52 PMGerry, I think that teaching is practical and contributing career and it takes skill.
Epically at the graduate school level.
ENFP can make great teachers. I would love to teach a class on interpersonal commincation, or psychology of personality. Anything that makes people think and realize things they never thought of before.
That is why I am going to grad school with the intent of getting my PHD in psychology.
I want to achieve the higest level possible, and achieve some self actulzation in the process.
But practical skilled jobs that pay,,, you mention some jobs where people operate machines, and work will tools, more physical. Who wants to work that hard! LOL
I would rather use my brain and my heart and a little physical, and save my physically hobbies, like dancing, piano playing, and cleaning teeth, for fun!!!
That is my take on what you said. -

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Sat, August 4, 2007 - 8:55 PMAlso would love to teach, science classes, like chemistry and biology, and math to kids who dont get it.
I think that would be so rewarding...
I did well in biology, and nutrition, not so hot in math, but straight A's in English, and A's in linguistics.
Psychology I get b's and C's and that is what Im going into!! AHHH
:) I dont care. -

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Tue, August 14, 2007 - 4:43 PMUltimately, ENFP's need meaning in their careers, whatever form that takes. It helps sometimes to think of what it would be like to look back on life when you're retired and aged. Would you look back and say, "wow, what an amazing difference I made in people's lives creating websites?" Or, "man, twenty years of my life I was an advertising excecutive and boy was I good at getting those people to buy the products." I know that's shallow of me to say. LOL. I'm sure I'll get slack from that :) Overall though, ENFP's need to work with people and make a difference in their lives--whether that takes place at home, or in the workplace.

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Fri, August 17, 2007 - 6:38 PMFair point...
I think you're right about the making a difference part. I know that my satisfaction comes when i see a customer happy because i solved a problem that they didnt have the capacity to get solved on their own. -
-
Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Sat, August 18, 2007 - 5:28 PMKen,
I think that people have the capcity to solve their own problems, but that we as ENFP's being insightful and encouraging, want to transform or think we can transform other people.
I like to encourage people to figure out their problems (personal ones) for themselves so they develop independence, and a sense of personal responsibility and strength within themselves. Which is there. Sometimes I think people just need something to believe in, without a belief its hard to keep caring. I think I am becomeing more of an ENFJ, as time goes along. I really value letting people be themselves and I resist changing people anymore.
I used to think that everyone was the same, all the world needs is more understanding, and empathy and that people should be more emotional like me. I think its because I was projecting a bit... -
-
Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Tue, September 4, 2007 - 6:55 PMyeah.. when i said solve a problem they couldnt solve on their own.. i mean like a software problem.. something that they probably could solve if given enough time, but they would rather focus on understanding their primary discipline and not have to learn to write software... so we write it.. and solve it...

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 6:29 PM
I'm new to the site, and I find it kind of amazing and reassuring how everybody here is going through the same "career crisis" that I am. Its good to know that there are people out there like me.
Anyway- Christina- I worked in the Entertainment Industry (briefly). I wanted to be a sitcom writer. However, it's very difficult to get into. I started out as an intern at a Literary Agency (who represents lots of TV writers) and eventually got promoted to an Agent's Assistant. It was the worst job in the whole world. It was tediously repetitive, the hours were horrible, and the work was very overwhelming. I’m okay with working hard, but the people there are so horrible and shallow (for the most part). To actually get anywhere in that industry you have to go through A LOT of administrative assistant jobs (which seem horrible for ENFPs) and be able to take a lot of harsh criticism (ENFPs are generally sensitive). I lasted less than a year. It sounds so fun to work in that industry, but it really breaks you down spiritually. My theory is that if you HAVE to work in the Entertainment Industry- if you can't think of ANY other possibilities, than do it. But from my experience in that industry (in truth, it was very brief) I had so many other ideas for a career that it just wasn't worth the torture.
I quit that job about a month ago and have been spending my time agonizing over what to do next. I have my BA in English (minor in Radio Television Film), but I am thinking of becoming a Physician's Assistant, Dietitian, Nurse, Editor, Librarian, Psychologist, Romance Novelist and anything else there is out there. It’s very annoying how indecisive I am. I'm thinking of going back to school so I don't have to make up my mind about a career- but then I would have to choose what to get my Masters in! :)
In the past I have worked as a server, bartender, copywriter, assistant, public relations specialist, and dance instructor. I liked bartending, but I was getting horrible shifts, and I liked copywriting, but it was hard to work in isolation. Copywriting also got to be repetitive and mundane, so I can't see myself doing that fulltime.
Are there ENFPs out there who are Physician's Assistants?
Also- sorry this is so long.

Thu, September 6, 2007 - 2:47 AMhey lila,
how funny . . . one of my dream jobs has always been to be a sitcom writer . . . thanks to you, now i won't wonder anymore. i too have done tons of admin. ass't jobs (yuck! - hated it!) and i also waitressed, taught dance & have my BA in English. never wanted to be a physicians ass't but did seriously want to become an Ayurvedic practitioner at one point in my life . . . have also been interested in massage therapy & holistic "alternative" therapy type things as well. never ended up pursuing any for a career though but was always drawn to healing the whole person. i personally would feel very limited by western medicine. -

Who knew there was so much to this personality stuff : ) .
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 3:09 PMHi. I'm new here....but I have to say that I've laughed out loud several times reading some of your posts, b/c they sound so much like me! And here I thought I was some lone mutant who "overthinks" everything and has this unique urge to do "something important" with my life -- I mean, who am I, right?! : ) I went to college originally for my B.A. in Elementary Education....but, for me, I just felt like it wouldn't be intellectually stimulating enough -- like I wouldn't develop past sixth grade mentally if all I talked about all day were dinosaurs and the 50 states. haha, I don't know. So, halfway through college, I had the brilliant idea to change my major to Communication Studies. Sounded like a great idea at the time....but now I am almost three years out of school and still have no idea what I want to do with my life. I am just so ready to have a direction, ya know? Currently, I work for a museum as a grant writer, which, I have to admit, doesn't suit me too well. Too many deadlines and details required! Can't someone just pay me to come up with ideas? : ) I am in the process of applying to a bunch of jobs -- some in advertising, some in sales, and some as an editor (which might be another bad idea). I just have no idea which direction to take! I hope I don't feel this way forever. I can't go back to school right now -- just too much time and money....anyone have any good suggestions?

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 3:16 PMHey Lucy
That is pretty funny how we have the same interests! I knew quite a few television writers, and even once you get to that position (after the years of horrible admin. assistatn jobs), it's not exactly a dream job. It is def. a very unstable position, and it's not as creative as it sounds (execs pretty much tell you how to write, and if you don't do it how they say, you're fired). Plus its so shallow. I feel like I wouldn't be making any difference. Holistic medicine does sound interesting, but I know so little about it. The thing I don't like about a lot of traditional medicine is how some professionls dont get to the root of the problem: they just give you pain killers. Western medicine does have it's problems, I agree, but I would like to help people through medicine (right now).
I have always been on both ends of the spectrum: between biology and english, and I always seem to sway from one end to the other. I think I like the idea of becoming a physician's assistant because you have a lot of options. You can work anywhere, there is a great need for them, and they have a large scope of practice. Right now that seems like a good idea for me, but who knows? In another 5 months I might change my mind!
So what do you (and, for that matter- other ENFPs) do for a living?

Fri, September 7, 2007 - 4:05 AMWow! Hahaha! I wanted to be s sitcom writer too.
And I'm also very interested in children's literature. I find it fascinating to read myself and chose the books for kiddos to read. And I find it the most amuzing and fun process to write for kids.
So, maybe I've figured out "what to do with a BA in English"...

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 11:00 PMOh my god, I'm so relieved to found this site and that I'm not alien or nomad in my past live!
My head was nodding in agreement when I read all of your post!
I'm now 27 and sorta having 'quater-life' crisis (al well I guess I experience this crisis every minute of my day thinking about what should I be and what's the meaning and purpose of my life and that I know I could be someone or something great but I just dont know what it is!)
I'm an IT grad. Ever since young though I knew my biggest dream is to travel and live abroad to experience culture and new things. So I did, I worked in HK for half a year, then in Germany for a year, and now in Singapore which coming close to a year now (dont like it here and arching to move to Australia now). But the problem is I dont know what I want to do. I'm now working in a big audit firm , doing work involving abundance details work to review and audit system and it's killing me! Somehow it satisfy this ego thing of working in a big company with good benefits, what the hell do I still want and complaining about? Problem is I knew I have to quit the job now but I have been saying to myself I should give it another try since I dont have a back up plan or job in mind yet and that I should stick on a little to see how it goes.
Lila like u, I felt like goin back to school. Yeah then I dont have to make decision what to do but then I dont know what to study or the course I felt I want to study is the one I want. And plus I dont have the money for study!
I actually dont mind stability, now that im 27, but I need variety in the job. And now that Im thinking of moving to Australia, Im looking into working in a job in demand list in australia so I could migrate there!
Gosh its frustrating how my mind works!!

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Tue, June 2, 2009 - 9:38 PMChristine's list intrigues me; however, I find the lists in the book "Do What You Are" more complete, but something in the way she places words speaks to me. I'm suppose to be close to retirement but can't imagine a life of retire. I done many jobs and the most appealing to me has been owning my own business. Currently, I teach English at a middle school and this has been rewarding these past ten years, but I sense a change coming, so I'm searching again. Passion plays a big piece of my life. Without it I feel like a robot just going through the motions and even though the process I am performing may be difficult for most individuals, I have mastered it enough to feel like the talking robot. -

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 7:32 AMI have a great ENFP profession; I'm an archaeologist, which is always new and interesting. BUT I was loving it so much I went and did a PhD in it.
I have to tell you, doing a PhD is not easy for lots of ENFP people. To keep motivated through a very long and usually unsocial task which often seemed pointless AND requires long-term conscientiousness was extremely difficult for me, even though I never stopped loving archaeology and still do. It took me about nine years to finish mine and it was supposed to be done in three.
So for people thinking about careers I wanted to say, if a PhD is needed, plan carefully for how you are going to be able to do it - try to make it a mixture of practical work as well as a dissertation, maybe, and try to get lots of support from the institution and your colleagues to keep you from fizzling.

Wed, August 5, 2009 - 8:57 AMI love my job - I'm a diplomat. I get to live overseas, study new languages, and see politics up close. Actually, you should add politician to the list. Does anyone think Obama is an ENFP. As for college, I majored in cultural anthropology, which was great. I also considered history and art history. -

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 12:41 PM..Thanks for all the great posts... they make me feel not all that alone going into my third career at 33!! I wonder if its possible to transition from ENTP to ENFP, as I started my career as an electrical engineer, and now I'm a medical student. I always loved maths and sciences and saw engineering as the most creative scientific profession I could find. That lasted about 2 years after university when I transitioned to product marketing of the same components that I had designed as an engineer. It's a great feeling to come up with marketing and sales ideas for products that you actually invented. But, that dreaded ENFP intrinsic need for 'deeper meaning' was missing from work and I felt that selling more computer products to customer X, Y, and Z wasn't going to work for me in 20 years. So I made a leap and applied to medical school. I'm just finishing now, and in true ENFP fashion I'm looking at the more relationship-heavy specialties such as family medicine and psychiatry. Psychiatry is especially creative. I can speak to how product marketing / account management just can't be compared, even when you're helping a customer succeed financially or with another business issue. Some ENFPs can handle the more superficial level of interaction that the business world offers, in light of the creative possibilities that exist there. Ultimately, it's a very personal decision!!

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 7:47 PMThat is so freaking awsome!! Being a diplomat would be the ideal job for me. How did you become a diplomat? I always thought it was a long and difficult process. I plan on majoring in something practical, like English, International Business, or Psychology, and later attending law school. I would love to be a diplomat eventually. How did you get to the position you hold now, any advice you have for me? I do speak Croatian and German (obviously English) fluently, and want to learn French as well as Mandarin Chinese.

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 8:02 PMI read each line of your list. Congratulations, I usually hop around: your list is the first completely read one in a while. You did a good job naming the possible careers. I am in the process of choosing what major to freakin study. I want to do everything on that list-besides magazine writer. So I'm looking for a solid base for a major, something that would open doors right out of college graduation. Any suggestions? Right now, it's either Exercise Science, English, Psychology, or International Business.
Im also planning on minoring in Biology-just in case I want to head to med school. But the plan is law school, then Hollywood as a producer/writer. I constantly keep reminding myself though, "plans" change all the time with me haha like I said I want to do everything, just want a solid degree out of college that can rack in some much needed cashhhhhh -

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 9:23 AMIvE: I couldn't imagine myself being an attorney...too much paper work and jeopardizing my value system.
As a strong ENFP, I also often think the grass is greener on the other side (career wise) so I feel you. Even though my background is in the environmental sciences and engineering, I envy those in psychology. I think psych is a perfect fit for us, especially counseling or becoming a life coach or a psychiatrist. Good money and the demand will continue to rise since our world's value system is screwed...

Re: Best Careers for ENFP, and college majors, some ideas...
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 2:08 PMIt was really interesting reading everyone's comments- sometimes you feel so different as an ENFP, like no one understands you- so good to read what you guys wrote. I'm trying to decide what to do with my life too. I am an ENFP with really strong N. If somehow I could travel, learn languages, write little articles and take gorgeous photos and get paid to do it, that's what I'd want to do. I have a travel blog that gets 30,000 visitors a month, but only makes a few hundred dollars a year from google ads- I wish it made me a living. Though even then, I don't think it would be social enough for me. I have a BA in Music and a Masters degree in Ethnomusicology. Ethnomusicology appealed to me because you have to travel to do your field work, and I got to spend two summers in France (paid for by myself though sometimes you can get grant money for this). I am still totally tempted to go back into academia even though I ran from it five years ago. At the Masters level it ends up very very philosophical (what we studied had nothing to do with anything concrete here on earth, let alone music). But I do love the lifestyle (no boss mostly, free schedule) and being around smart people and the fun youthful happy atmosphere at the university. I have to say though that everyone in the program was very serious and politically correct (no one could understand ENFP humor). There were no ENFPs amongst any of the graduate students I met- lots of INTPs and INTJs. I don't know why I can't get doing another Masters or a PhD off my mind then! Do any of you other ENFPs feel the same way about graduate studies?
I taught History of Jazz at a community college for a year. I loved doing the research in preparation for the lectures, and reading people's writing assignments. But actually giving the lectures was very draining (felt like I was acting like someone I'm not, and also it was weird to give out all that energy and not get any feedback in return). Has anyone else found this about teaching?
I've done a ton of other jobs: preschool substitute (cute kids but mind-numbing boredom after a while), English as a Second Language Conversation Partner (really fun to meet foreign students but pays low), Piano and Guitar Teacher (pays quite well but hard to get parents to bring their kids reliably), Administrative Jobs (usually don't last longer than a day at these!)
I'd love to hear from more ENFPs about what you've enjoyed and haven't enjoyed doing as far as careers...
